Thomas Tuchel told to pick Premier League star he’s never called up for England after man-of-the-match display

Lewis Hall is ‘England’s next left-back’ and is capable of starring in multiple positions for club and country.

That’s the view of former Newcastle striker Micky Quinn, who heaped praise on the Magpies defender after impressing during his side’s Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City on Tuesday night.

Eddie Howe‘s side were beaten 2-0 in the first leg of their last four clash thanks to goals from Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki.

Despite Semenyo getting on the scoresheet, Hall acquitted himself well defensively against City’s £62.5million arrival.

The 21 year old won ten of his 15 duels on the night, but it was his performance on the ball that caught the eye.

Hall’s dribbling ability was on full display at St James’ Park, as he regularly drove out of defence to get Newcastle up the pitch, and looked a real threat going forward.

‘Brilliant’ Hall gets seal of approval

Former Toon star Quinn believes the young full-back possesses the quality to become England‘s starting left-back for years to come.

With just two senior caps to his name, Hall is yet to be called up by Three Lions boss Tuchel, having seen his progress hampered by a season-ending foot injury last term.

But after returning to star for Newcastle this term, he is now bidding to be named in the German’s World Cup squad this summer.

There is plenty of competition at left-back, with Man City’s Nico O’Reilly, Arsenal starlet Myles Lewis-Skelly and Spurs man Djed Spence as hopefuls, as well as Newcastle teammates Tino Livramento and Dan Burn.

But Quinn insisted Hall should be top pick, as he waxed lyrical about the Chelsea academy graduate after his Carabao Cup display.

Quinn told talkSPORT on Wednesday: “He got injured, I think it was spring time last year, and I was touting him for the England left-back.

“This kid is the next England left-back. I’m telling you now, he’s grown in confidence, he’s over his injury.

“He could play midfield as well, because he’s skilful, he can beat players, he can cross the ball, he can defend.

“He is a brilliant left-back, and he’s the future of Newcastle United, along with Lewis Miley, who’s only 19. And this kid can play any position, he’s got such a good footballing brain.”

Hall’s England competition

After facing setbacks in his return to fitness, Hall has made 22 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle this season.

And he has been back on top form in recent months, starting all but two of the Magpies’ last 11 Premier League games, which has coincided with his side climbing up to sixth in the table.

But he doesn’t have long left to force himself into Tuchel’s plans, with two friendlies against Uruguay and Japan in March his last opportunity before England’s World Cup squad is named in May.

Hall’s two senior international caps came under interim boss Lee Carsley in November 2024.

The young defender made his debut off the bench in a 3-0 win over Greece, before playing all 90 minutes in a 5-0 victory against the Republic of Ireland three days later.

But England’s starting left-back yet to become clear under Tuchel, Hall will be hoping to win back the shirt in time for the summer.

Man City starlet O’Reilly and Spurs’ Djed Spence – a right back by trade – were the options for England during the November international break.

Arsenal’s Lewis-Skelly has earned all of his six England caps under Tuchel, but has struggled for game time at club level this season.

Also in the running to start in the role are Hall’s club teammates Livramento and Burn – despite the duo being deployed at right-back and centre-back respectively for Newcastle.
