The future Hall-of-Famer Jaguars could sign to replace Devin Lloyd

The Jacksonville Jaguars will have a lot of prove during the 2026 season. Jacksonville had a controversial draft haul and let some talented players walk during NFL free agency. Perhaps adding one veteran player on defense could help get the Jaguars back to the playoffs in 2026.

ESPN’s Matt Bowen paired free agents with their ideal team fits in a recent article. He suggested that Jacksonville should sign veteran Bobby Wagner to replace Devin Lloyd.

“Wagner’s 9.5 tackles per game ranked sixth overall in 2025, showing he can still key quickly and rack up run stops. He does have limitations in coverage at this stage of his career, which Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile would have to manage,” Bowen wrote. “However, as an early-down defender, Wagner could potentially take on the role next to Foyesade Oluokun. Devin Lloyd, who was a mainstay on Jacksonville’s second level, signed a three-year, $45 million deal with the Panthers this offseason.”

Wagner has never stopped being a successful NFL linebacker. He is an iron man, only missing 10 games in the regular season during his 14-year career.

The 35-year-old linebacker was highly productive in Washington in 2025. He logged 162 total tackles with four-and-a-half sacks,, two interceptions, and four passes defensed. In short, Wagner can still play at a high level.

That said, Wagner’s limitations in coverage could be a problem for Jacksonville. This potential signing could easily work out if the Jaguars have a good plan for who will replace Wagner on third downs. But realistically, that roster deficiency is Jacksonville’s fault and Wagner’s.

Ultimately, Wagner wants to return for his 15th NFL season. The Jaguars are a playoff contender who could look appealing to Wagner on a one-year contract.

It will be interesting to see if Jacksonville takes a look at him later this summer.
