Texas Tech president speaks up on Brendan Sorsby’s second chance
Texas Tech president Lawrence Schovanec has weighed in on the Brendan Sorsby situation that has rocked the college football world. The Red Raiders quarterback acknowledged placing wagers on multiple college football games during his time at Indiana University, including at least 40 bets involving his own teammates. According to Sorsby, those wagers were made with the expectation that his teammates would perform well. The NCAA later ruled him ineligible based on betting activity that occurred during his 2022 redshirt freshman season with the Hoosiers, prompting him to challenge the decision in court.
A judge ultimately granted Sorsby a temporary injunction, allowing him to suit up for Texas Tech University during the 2026 season while the legal dispute continues. As part of the ruling, however, Sorsby will be required to sit out Texas Tech’s first two games of the season. The NCAA has since appealed the decision.
Schovanec, in a quote obtained by Trey Wallace, expressed sympathy for Sorsby in the incident.
“Brendan made a mistake, we acknowledge that, mistakes have consequences. At the same time, here’s a young man with a dream and vision to pursue a career. We felt, not to have the opportunity to pursue that career given the circumstances and evolving changes in this world athletes face, was unfair and unjust.”
So, prognosticators and members of the college football community have expressed their disapproval with Source B being able to play for Texas Tech in 2026 and the wider implications of the ruling on college football. Georgia has announced that they will not schedule any athletic events against Texas Tech until further notice. Several Big 12 athletic directors have floated a boycott of Texas Tech.
Fox Big Noon Kickoff analyst Joel Klatt put into perspective the wide-ranging effects of the ruling in a social media post.
“The NCAA, they have no ability to enforce any rule whatsoever. If you can’t enforce this rule as, as an organization with member institutions, then what rule can you enforce? I mean, the guy bet thousands of times thousands of dollars. Like, what are, what are we doing?”
