The odds suggest that there’s not much to split these two nations. Algeria finished third in Group J with four points, whereas the Swiss claimed top spot in Group B with seven points, beating out World Cup co-hosts Canada.

The storyline of this clash is intensified by former Switzerland manager Vladimir Petkovic now being in charge of Algeria. Petkovic coached Switzerland for seven years between 2014 and 2021, credited with spearheading their rise up the world rankings.

But now his task is to stop his former employers from making the round of 16.

Johan Manzambi has been a breakout star for the Swiss so far this tournament. Three goals in the last two games has contributed to his nations success in the group stages.

The 20 year old is full of confidence and will likely lead the line yet again.

Under Vladimir Petkovic, the Algerians have only lost one of their last seven, against Argentina in the group stage.

They’re a tough nut to crack. Beating the Netherlands, drawing with Uruguay and thrashing Bolivia in La Paz, known for it’s high altitude, in recent months.

Their draw with Austria showcased the best and worst of the Algerians. Switzerland drew four in a row, including the opening 1-1 draw before their two wins that helped them top the group.

Three matches have already gone to extra time in this tournaments. It could become four on Friday.

There was six goals in Algeria’s last match against Austria. Dubbed a dead rubber before the match, a bore draw would have got them both through. But both teams went hell for leather, attack the best form of defence?

If Algeria played that way in a game of little jeopardy. It’s likely they’ll make this one chaotic and try to catch the Swiss off guard. They have the perfect man in charge to tap into Switzerland’s flaws.
