Steelers rumors: Is Mike McCarthy-Aaron Rodgers reunion a possibility?
The Pittsburgh Steelers would like Aaron Rodgers to return in 2026, but their recent divorce from head coach Mike Tomlin has seemingly made that outcome unlikely. However, the team is now expressing interest in former Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy, adding an interesting new wrinkle to the situation.
As the Steelers begin their job search, McCarthy is among the first people they are expected to speak with, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported. If hired, McCarthy is the coach Rodgers has worked with the most throughout his 21-year career.
Although McCarthy’s time in Green Bay ended poorly, Rodgers denied ever having a bad relationship with his former head coach. Without Tomlin, he might be one of the few coaches who could convince Rodgers to return for another year.
Rodgers has been non-committal about his future each year for the last five years. He took a while before deciding to return for another year with the Steelers in the 2025 offseason, expecting to play for one final year.
However, Rodgers’ strong finish to the year reportedly convinced him to consider sticking around in 2026. But with the Steelers going up in flames in the Wild Card round and Tomlin’s subsequent departure, it is anyone’s guess what the 42-year-old is thinking entering yet another open-ended offseason.
This is a developing story.
