Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama could be a major sneaker free agent sooner than you think
San Antonio Spurs All-Star Victor Wembanyama is on the verge of inking a new lucrative shoe contract, as his current deal with Nike is set to expire this year, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. As Wembanyama continues to prove he’s the NBA’s future face of the league, winning the Western Conference Finals’ MVP award following Defensive Player of the Year honors, and runner-up for MVP, he’s got another bag waiting for him in 2026.
Wemanyama’s current deal with Nike expires in October, making the Spurs’ young phenom the biggest sneaker free agent on the NBA market, according to Charania, he said, per Cousins with Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady.
“You have a guy like Victor Wembanyama at Nike, we’ll see what happens with his future now on the shoe side, clearly he’s that next guy up,” Charania said.
While other NBA stars such as Oklahoma City Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum, are signed to their respective Converse and Jordan brand deals, Wembanyama’s next deal could be historic ahead of a potential bidding war.
“You think about the timing of this, right? He’s 22-years-old. He’s about to be in the Finals, just won conference finals MVP,” Charania added. “He just won Defenive Player of the Year — first unanimous ever. Anthony Edwards? He’s locked in at Adidas. He’s got a big deal, too. Luka Doncic’s locked in with Jordan. He’s got a big deal. Think about other faces of the league — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander — he’s got a big deal at Converse. Jayson Tatum — he’s also locked in at Jordan brand.
“So, when you think of all those other young faces are locked in, you have a guy like Victor Wembanyama at Nike, we’ll see what happens with his future now on the shoe side. Clearly, he’s that next guy up.”
Victor Wembanyama will be a sneaker free agent in October, per @ShamsCharania.
