In Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Saturday night, the San Antonio Spurs were defeated 94-90 by the New York Knicks, who secured the series 4-1 to win their first championship since 1973.

New York overcame a 16-point deficit in the deciding game, with Jalen Brunson scoring 45 points on 14-of-27 shooting and pouring in 13 straight points for the Knicks in the fourth quarter.

Victor Wembanyama produced 19 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots on 7-of-19 shooting. De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle combined for 13 points on 4-of-25 shooting, while Dylan Harper led San Antonio with 25 points in 31 minutes.

Wembanyama, who led the league with 3.1 blocks per game and finished third in MVP voting while also earning Defensive Player of the Year, All-NBA First Team, and All-Defensive First Team honors in his third season along with a second All-Star selection, ended his press conference with an awkward sign-off.

San Antonio controlled stretches early, building leads of as many as 10 points in the first quarter and up to 16 in the second. The Spurs became the first team in the play-by-play era (since 1996-97) to lead five Finals games by 10 or more points in the opening quarter. New York responded with a 22-9 second-quarter run, eating into the lead before halftime, where San Antonio led 42-37. The game featured the lowest combined first-half scoring in a Finals game since 2010 (79 points in Game 7 of Lakers-Celtics) and a 31.8% combined field goal percentage, the lowest in the Finals play-by-play era. In the fourth quarter, the Knicks outscored the Spurs 29-18.

San Antonio’s Finals run ended with its first home loss in franchise history, while New York improved to 4-0 in closeout games on the road and engineered multiple comebacks, including a historic 29-point rally in Game 4 that was capped by OG Anunoby’s tip-in with just 1.2 seconds remaining.
