Spurs’ Mitch Johnson reveals what went wrong in Game 5 vs. Thunder
Two days after completely demolishing the Oklahoma City Thunder, the San Antonio Spurs seemed to carry that momentum into Game 5. San Antonio came out strong in the first quarter, taking advantage of the injured Oklahoma City team to an early lead. However, as the game progressed, they slowly squandered their lead over the defending champions.
The Spurs tried to fight their way into the game, but they just weren’t able to break through the Thunder’s defense. In the end, they absorbed a 127-114 loss that was more lopsided than the final score suggested. Head coach Mitch Johnson was asked about the Spurs’ struggles, and he was very blunt in his assessment.
“It just felt like it was a little bit of everything,” Johnson said. “We did not put ourselves in position enough to be successful in each possession. So, to beat a team of this caliber in their building with what’s on the stakes, we’ll need to be a lot better to give yourself a chance… There were a lot of things that we were just in wrong positions or wrong coverages or poor decisions, which I’ll go back and look at the film.”
The Spurs were completely unable to get through the Thunder in Game 5. The Thunder jumped out to an 11-point lead at halftime after a fierce second quarter from the defending champions. OKC was never able to fully pull away from San Antonio, but San Antonio just couldn’t get a good hold on their opponents during the game. It certainly didn’t help that their star players, Victor Wembanyama (20 points, 4-15 from the field) and De’Aaron Fox (9 points, 4-15) did not get going at all during the game.
Now, the Spurs find themselves on the brink of elimination in the series. Game 6 will be played in San Antonio in front of their fans, but they’ll need to win another game in Oklahoma City to make it to the Finals. Do these young Spurs have another gear left in them for one more push, or have the defending champions worn them down fully over the course of the series?
