Spurs’ Mitch Johnson drops truth bomb on epic 2OT Game 1 vs. Thunder
They needed 10 more minutes, but the San Antonio Spurs got the job done against the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of their conference finals at Paycom Center on Monday.
The Spurs escaped the Thunder in double overtime, 122-115, silencing the home crowd and spoiling the MVP trophy ceremony of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Victor Wembanyama smelled blood and destroyed San Antonio with monster numbers of 41 points, 24 rebounds, three assists, and three blocks.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson looked relieved after emerging victorious in the pulsating game, acknowledging that both teams laid everything on the line for 58 minutes.
“It was a competitive game. It felt like both teams just kept doing enough to not be put away,” said Johnson in the postgame conference.

No one led by more than 10 points, as the Spurs and the Thunder kept exchanging runs.
The Spurs badly outrebounded the Thunder, 61-40, but they gave up 28 points off 23 turnovers.
It was San Antonio’s fifth win against Oklahoma City in six meetings.
Wembanyama got plenty of help, with Dylan Harper tallying 24 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and seven steals and Stephon Castle adding 17 points, six rebounds, and 11 assists. Castle, however, had 11 turnovers.
The Spurs refused to fold, even though the Thunder grabbed the lead several times in regulation and the two extensions. Johnson lauded their composure in the nail-biting affair.
“It was a war of wills. The levels of mental toughness exuded by both teams, we needed every second from everybody that played,” added Johnson, as quoted in the report from the Associated Press’ Tim Reynolds.
Game 2 is on Wednesday.
