Sheffield United re-sign fan favourite – two days after he was released

Jairo Riedewald has returned to Sheffield United – two days after he was officially released at Bramall Lane.

The 29-year-old has penned a one-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

Riedewald linked up with the Blades on an initial short-term deal last October, which was extended to the end of June.

The defensive midfielder, who can also operate as a centre-back, chipped in with three goals and one assist from 25 Championship outings in the 2025/26 season.

But he was named on the club’s released list in May – before becoming one of a number of unemployed stars on Tuesday.

However, the former Crystal Palace man is back with the Yorkshire outfit – much to the delight of Blades boss Chris Wilder.

What has Riedewald said about re-joining Sheffield United?

Speaking to the club’s media team, the three-cap Netherlands international said: “The patience [has] definitely paid off, so I’m happy.

“I was staying in good contact with the coaching staff, I’m back in the building now, so [I’m] very excited.

“I think it’s good for me to come in early, get some minutes in the legs in pre-season and prepare ourselves in the best way ahead of a great season hopefully.”

He added: “I wanted to come in as soon as possible, so very happy to join this club again in July.

“I was always in good contact in the months of June and May with the coaching staff, with the people at this club.

“So to come in and get it done, get it signed, is massive for me.”

And for Riedewald, he has just one goal to achieve this season: Premier League promotion.

United finished in 13th spot in the recent campaign – finishing 13 points outside the play-off spaces – with only three teams conceding more than the 66 goals they shipped in.

Commenting on his quest to help guide his side back to the promised land, Riedewald stated: “I think the challenge is clear, we know what we need to improve compared to last season.

“We know what we need to build on compared to last season, so we’ve got a good five-six weeks to make sure we get everything right.

“From defending, conceding and scoring goals, so hopefully we can focus on those details and get it right this season.”

Wilder meanwhile has praised United’s board at making sure Riedewald remains at his disposal for the upcoming term.

He remarked: “Everyone here holds Jairo in the highest regard, his performances last year were excellent, and I am delighted he’ll be part of the new journey.

“I have to say the board have been great.

“They knew I wanted Jairo here and made it possible for the dialogue to continue and thankfully patience has paid off on both sides.

“It has just taken a little longer to get there, but we’re all thrilled he’s staying with us.”
