Sheff Utd v Sheff Wed prediction

Sheffield United head into Sunday lunchtime’s Steel City derby knowing they might have the possibility to relegate their fiercest rivals.

Sheffield Wednesday currently sit on -7 points with 14 matches still to play, leaving them 41 points from safety with 42 points still to play for.

A win or draw for Chris Wilder’s side against their rivals on Sunday would guarantee Wednesday’s relegation, provided West Brom don’t do the job for them on Saturday by getting the better of league leaders Coventry.

The Blades head into Sunday’s crunch clash have picked up 10 points from their last five matches following victory at Portsmouth last week which lifted them up to 15th in the Championship table, just three points off the top half.

United have won four of their last five league games at Bramall Lane, losing just one of their last nine ahead of their match with arch rivals Wednesday, who make their way across the city on a run of 10 consecutive defeats in all competitions.

Sheffield Wednesday have been deducted 18 points across the Championship season, for a combination of filing for administration as well as failing to meet payment obligations, and with just one win all season, currently find themselves on -7 points.

Henrik Pedersen will be hoping his side can at least delay at least delay the inevitable so as not to let his side’s local rivals put the final nail in the relegation coffin, though doing so would mean picking up a first victory in any competition since September.

The Owls haven’t won a Steel City derby in 14 years, leaving them winless in their last seven and without so much as scoring in any of their last six.

Sheffield United have won each of their last three matches against Wednesday, who haven’t won at Bramall Lane in 17 years, and have won only once away against their arch rivals since 1967.

It’s difficult to see anything other than a dominant Blades victory, who will be fired up with the knowledge they could be the ones to inflict relegation on their fiercest rivals in what has been a desperate campaign for the Owls – a 3-0 home win looks most likely.
