Newcastle have been told to target Scott McTominay if and when the midfielder wants to return to the Premier League.

McTominay’s career has exploded since a move to Napoli in 2024.

The 29-year-old was named as Serie A Player of the Year on their way to the league title.

He has more than justified the £25.7million transfer fee that Napoli paid Manchester United just 18 months ago.

A return to the Premier League will always be mooted and it’s been said on talkSPORT’s Inside The Toon YouTube show that he is the exact profile of player Newcastle should be after.

The Sun’s sports editor and Newcastle fan Shaun Custis said: “Is that not the sort of player we should be targeting? Because he is probably not going to go to Arsenal or Man City.

“He probably would fancy another crack at the Premier League and it feels like he could be on our radar.”

On what role he could play, Custis said: “He’s probably a support striker. If you played him in midfield then he’s that surging forward midfielder.”

What has McTominay said?

McTominay was at Manchester United from the age of five before breaking into the first team.

The Scotland international played 255 times for the club before moving to Italy.

He spoke about how much he loved life in Europe, saying in an inerview last year: “The people in Naples are incredible, they’re so passionate and everywhere you go there are people who say ‘Forza Napoli’ and they want to speak to you and have a conversation and that inspires you every time you go on the pitch because they care.

“It’s different, a totally different way of life over there – the way you eat, the way you live and all that. It gives you more mental strength. I’ve always lived very close to my mum, so I could go whenever I wanted.

“Now, living 1,500 miles away, I can’t just pop home to see my mum, my family, my sister and my kids so it’s different, but in life you sometimes have to step out of your comfort zone and I’ve always prided myself on that.

“I would never want to be in my comfort zone, and if I can go away anywhere and establish myself and do well, why not? Who’s to stop me doing that?”

Scott McTominay and the World Cup

McTominay will be able to display his talents on a global stage this summer after playing a pivotal role in Scotland’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

He etched himself into Scotland folklore with a stunning bicycle kick in a 4-2 win over Denmark to secure their place at the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

McTominay said: “I think well over 500.

“I’m not even joking. It gives me goosebumps still thinking about it.

“I’m pretty big on manifesting and feeling something on the bus before games.

“And I’m not going to sit here and say that I manifested something like that, but I manifested a pretty good goal.

“And then Andy Robertson said a nice word to me before we played the game about the stage we’re on and this is where big players come and do their stuff.

“And I thought about it and was like, you know what, why can’t I be one of them?

“Why can’t that be the thing that fuels my fire in games like that? And that’s what you live for.”

Scotland have been drawn in a group with Brazil, Morocco and Haiti for the World Cup.
