Ryan Garcia receives fine after narrowly missing weight-check deadline for world title fight

Ryan Garcia has been fined $5,000 after missing a 14-day weight check deadline, an issue which has since been resolved.

Garcia is currently just a week out from his huge WBC welterweight world title clash with champion Mario Barrios in Las Vegas.

‘King Ry’ is working towards the 147lbs limit, and was required to meet a standard 14-day weight check ahead of the showdown.

But in a fresh controversy, the American superstar missed the initial deadline to meet the check.

He did go on to submit video evidence of himself on target, tipping the scales at 154.2lbs when evidence was provided, leaving him within 5 per cent of the limit as required.

Although unfortunately he was late in his submission, and was fined $5,000 with a stern warning that he could face further punishment.

In a declaration of non-compliance revealed by Boxing Scene, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman wrote: “Ryan Garcia’s 14-day weight check was supposed to be received this past Saturday, February 7.

“Champion Barrios did comply with the video of this mandatory safety rule. The WBC hereby imposes a $5000 (five thousand dollars) fine for non-compliance.

“We expect to receive the weight video either today or first thing tomorrow morning depending on his training schedule.

“If we do not receive this video by then, we will be making a press statement and will contact the boxing commission with this concern.”

Garcia did submit the video and the matter has now been dropped, with full focus now on proceedings in the squared circle next weekend.

The challenger will hope to avoid fresh controversy, having only returned to the sport in May last year.

Garcia was subjected to a one-year ban after testing positive for banned substance Ostarine in 2024 after his stunning victory over Devin Haney that year, which was later overturned.

Garcia’s hopes of crowning world glory

Garcia has yet to become a world champion during his career to date, but having achieved commercial success, it is his natural next step.

His last outing saw him beaten by Rolly Romero in a lacklustre affair, the second defeat of his career.

But despite the loss, he has found himself back in the mix at 147lbs, in a fight which many believe he can win as the favourite.

And the 27-year-old is motivated by the scent of redemption and avoiding putting another stain on his professional resume.

He said: “Two [defeats] is cool, but three is too much. I don’t wanna get this third loss at all.

“He doesn’t want to get it. It’s debatable that he lost his last fight, but it was called a draw. But at the end of the day, we don’t want to lose and we’re both at this moment.

“That’s why I think this is a sleeper fight. Some people don’t think this is gonna be a good event.

“I think it is, and I predict that it’s gonna be very bloody. I can see a lot of cuts and grueling fighting.”
