Reports: Shreyas Iyer to receive rehab plan after specialist review in December
Indian batter Shreyas Iyer is all set for a decisive scan in mid-December. The results of this assessment will determine when he can officially begin rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru and gradually work his way back towards cricket.
Iyer has been out of action since suffering a severe impact injury to his left lower rib cage during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. Initial scans revealed a laceration to his spleen, accompanied by internal bleeding, an injury that required immediate medical intervention and a prolonged recovery timeline. The BCCI confirmed on October 27 that he was being treated extensively in Sydney before being discharged after stabilisation. The 31-year-old has since made some progress, but his return remains dependent on clearance from specialists.
According to an India Today report, Iyer will undergo an ultrasound scan in the second week of December. The scan is expected to give clarity on the healing of his spleen and surrounding tissues. Following this, a specialist sports medicine expert, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, who has overseen his case, will review the results and frame a detailed rehabilitation plan.
In earlier stages of recovery, Iyer underwent a USG scan near his residence, the visuals of which were reviewed by Dr. Pardiwala. Seeing the progress, the medical team allowed him to resume day-to-day movements and basic isometric exercises. However, cricket-specific training will only restart once the December scan confirms complete internal healing.
Shreyas is starting his preparation on coming back to the team: Morne Morkel
In his absence, Ruturaj Gaikwad was tested at No. 4 and even registered a maiden ODI century. Meanwhile, India bowling coach Morne Morkel recently shared a major update, confirming that Iyer is progressing well.
"Shreyas has also started his rehab, which is great. So, we are looking forward to welcoming them back into the squad. The good thing is that they are healthy and they are starting their preparation on their way back into the team," Morkel said in Ranchi.
