Red Sox’s Sonny Gray set to return to rotation after injury

The Boston Red Sox are receiving a Sonny Gray boost on Wednesday. Gray has been on the injured list with a hamstring injury. On Wednesday, Gray was reinstated from the IL, the Red Sox announced. The Red Sox optioned left-handed pitcher Alec Gamboa to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Gray has been working hard to return from the injury. The right-handed hurler was traded to the Red Sox from the St. Louis Cardinals this past offseason. However, the veteran starting pitcher’s career with his new team did not begin the way he envisioned.

Gray pitched to a 4.30 ERA through his first five starts. He was unable to find much of a rhythm on the mound. The 36-year-old ultimately landed on the injured list after his first five outings of the new season.

The Red Sox are hopeful that the three-time All-Star will help the ball club turn their season around. At 15-21 overall, Boston is currently in last place in the American League East standings. The ball club could still potentially compete, but they will need more players to step up and make an impact.

Boston is currently playing the Detroit Tigers in a three-game series. The Red Sox lead the series 2-0, as they earned a 5-4 win on Monday and a 10-3 victory on Tuesday. Gray will get the start on Wednesday night against Jack Flaherty (0-2, 5.90 ERA). It should be a competitive ball game between the American League opponents.

First pitch for the matchup is scheduled for 6:40 PM EST in Detroit on Wednesday night.
