Red Sox rumors: Ken Rosenthal demands Alex Bregman re-signing or monster Bo Bichette deal

The Boston Red Sox have made their first addition to the lineup with first baseman Willson Contreras. Sonny Gray has joined the team as well, both in seperate trades from the St Louis Cardinals. But after a bounce-back 2025 campaign, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal says they cannot be done. Rosenthal says that the Red Sox have to sign either Alex Bregman or Bo Bichette before spring training begins.

“The pending acquisition of first baseman Willson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals was Breslow’s first step toward boosting his offense. But if he does not add another bat somewhere, he essentially would be swapping out Bregman for Contreras without additional upgrades to a lineup that after the All-Star break ranked only 14th in runs per game,” Rosenthal wrote.

“[Bregman’s] impact on the Red Sox last season was transformative, even though he missed nearly seven weeks due to a strained right quad. And if the Red Sox lose him? They could turn around and sign Bichette, the younger player who [The Athletic’s Tim] Britton projects to receive eight years, $212 million. And if they played Bichette at second, perhaps they would be comfortable installing [Marcelo] Mayer at third.”

The Red Sox got a huge boost from Bregman, especially after they traded away Rafael Devers. Roman Anthony has injected the offense with incredible young talent, but he cannot carry them himself. Losing Bregman and only replacing him with Contreras would not keep them in contention in the American League East.

The Red Sox have three top prospects ready to make their mark on the team. Anthony has become a star, while Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell wait in the wings. But could their playoff appearance from 2025 push their timeline forward a touch? Or will Campbell’s poor MLB defense lead to a long-term change at second base?
