Red-hot Jordan Staal scores historic goal in Hurricanes’ Game 5 vs. VGK
The Carolina Hurricanes, who defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final to tie the series at two games apiece, have their sights set on moving to within a victory of what would be their first title in 20 years.
And captain Jordan Staal is on the heater of all heaters, scoring at a historic pace so far in the series. Staal, who entered the contest with goals in each of the first four games of the series, redirected a shot-pass from teammate Nikolaj Ehlers past Golden Knights goaltender Carter Hart at the midway point of the first period.

It was Staal’s fifth goal of the series, and also a historic tally in a series that has already featured several historical marks.
“Staal is first with goal in each of Games 1-5 of a Cup Final since 1956 Yvon Cournoyer was the last to do it in 5 consecutive games (that was 1973, Games 2-6),” wrote NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Staal, who is 37 years of age and hoping to win his first Stanley Cup since he did so with the Pittsburgh Penguins 17 years ago in 2009, admitted that he’s having a blast so far in the postseason following their Game 4 victory.
“I’m having so much fun out there. Just love grinding with these guys and just finding ways to get wins, and finding a way to get that mug,” Staal said.
It was his backhand shot past a sprawling Hart despite falling backward on his knees that served as the game-winning goal for Carolina in Game 4, and he’s helped them knot the score early in Game 5 at 1-1.
