Raiders’ $36 million signing gets cryptic update amid minicamp absence

The Las Vegas Raiders undertook a significant transformation of their defense during the first wave of free agency in March, completely revamping their second-level defense by bringing in high-profile linebackers Nakobe Dean and Quay Walker.

While Walker secured a lucrative contract, Dean became the cornerstone of the team’s defensive strategy by signing a substantial three-year, $36 million deal, which includes $20 million in fully guaranteed money. Although this major investment occurred months ago, the linebacker’s current status with the team has come to the forefront as mandatory offseason programs ramp up.

Concern arose when the high-priced acquisition was noticeably absent from the field during the first session of mandatory minicamp. ESPN’s Ryan McFadden reported that assistant head coach Mike McCoy quickly downplayed any internal worries about the linebacker’s absence from Tuesday’s practice.

McCoy confirmed that the defender has been consistently present at the facility and was even seen participating in the team’s official media day events on Monday. While the coaching staff did not specify whether his missed practice time was due to a health or injury issue, they underscored a broader strategy for player management.

He also stated that the team’s primary goal is to approach the offseason day by day to ensure that the entire roster remains well-rested and physically prepared for the highly anticipated season opener against the Miami Dolphins in September.

Initially, this mysterious absence sparked anxiety among fans. Still, Raiders insider Vinny Bonsignore reassured worried supporters on X, advising them not to panic as there is nothing to be concerned about. The organization is confident that the former Georgia standout will fit seamlessly into their system.

After a breakout season in 2024 with 128 tackles while playing for the Philadelphia Eagles, Dean faced injuries that limited him to just eight starts last year. However, his significant defensive potential easily justified the team’s major investment in him this spring.
