Premier League Darts star issues apology to fans after Michael van Gerwen thrashing

Josh Rock’s nightmare start in the Premier League Darts continued in Antwerp on Thursday night.

The world No.9 was beaten 6-2 in the quarter-finals by Michael van Gerwen at the AFAS Dome.

It followed a defeat to Jonny Clayton at the same stage last week in Newcastle.

As a result, Rock is still waiting for his first victory in his debut Premier League campaign.

The 24-year-old endured a difficult evening on the oche against Van Gerwen in Belgium.

Rock averaged just 79.34 across the eight legs as well as missing 11 out of 13 darts at a double.

Rock says sorry

The Northern Irishman issued an apology to his fans on social media following the match.

He also revealed an issue had been causing him problems on stage during his crushing defeat.

In a post shared to his Instagram story, Rock wrote: “Want to apologise to everyone who watched me.

“Felt fantastic up there but had no grip on my fingers, is what it is, we move on. All the best @mvg180.”

After the first two nights of action, Rock is one of two players yet to win a match.

Stephen Bunting has also lost in the quarter-finals in both Newcastle and Antwerp.

Rock will be hoping to bounce back on night three of the Premier League in Glasgow next week.

His task will not get any easier, though, as he faces former world champion Luke Humphries in the quarter-finals.

Night three will follow two more ProTour events as the Players Championship continues in Wigan.

Rock is set to compete at both tournaments, having not entered the first two events of the year in Hildesheim earlier this week.

Reaching the final

As for Van Gerwen, he followed up his victory over Rock by beating Luke Littler in the semi-finals.

The win booked the seven-time Premier League champion’s place in a second nightly final in a row.

Van Gerwen beat compatriot Gian van Veen in the showpiece clash last week.

However, he could not repeat those heroics as he was beaten 6-3 by Gerwyn Price in Thursday’s final.
