Oxford vs Sunderland predictions

Sunderland suffered their first home Premier League defeat of the season to Liverpool on Wednesday night. But will Regis Le Bris shuffle the pack as they take on Championship side Oxford in the FA Cup on Sunday?

Since these two sides last met in the second tier last season, the clubs have gone in polar opposite directions. Sunderland won promotion via the playoffs, now sitting comfortably in the top half of the Premier League.

Oxford survived relegation, but now sit second-bottom of the Championship.

The FA Cup could be welcome respite for both clubs though, especially for new U’s boss Matt Bloomfield who has only overseen a single victory since he arrived in early January.

Sunderland are the obvious favourites. But after taking points off high-flying Coventry in the last few weeks Oxford will hope home advantage inspires them to another big performance.

Oxford vs Sunderland betting tips

Oxford will have to be wary of a sharp Sunderland response after their loss to Liverpool on Wednesday. Le Bris may shuffle his pack and bring in the likes of Eliezer Mayenda, Nilson Angulo and Wilson Isidor from the start.

The Black Cats have already bettered their FA Cup run from last season, after crashing out to Stoke in the third round.

If Sunderland get a grip early, Enzo Le Fee should be able to dictate the tempo.

But if Oxford can get a foot-hold, then the new loan signing from Spurs Jamie Donley could recreate his FA Cup heroics.

On loan at Leyton Orient last season, Donley scored one of the goals of the tournament in the fourth round against Manchester City. As he lobbed goalkeeper Stefan Ortega from 50 yards out.

Fast forward 12 months, and he faces Premier League opposition again. Expect to see plenty of goals in this one. Oxford’s best chance might be to break the deadlock.
