Orioles’ Craig Albernaz seen talking to Pete Alonso after comical mishap in field

The Orioles signed Pete Alonso to a $155 million contract so that he will be their first baseman of the foreseeable future. However, he made an embarrassing gaffe at the cold corner on Sunday.

Alonso tried to let a pop fly drop in an effort to turn two. However, he wasn’t able to get a clean hold of the ball leading to both runners being safe. They would both come in to score, giving the Detroit Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Once the inning was over, Alonso was seen talking with manager Craig Albernaz, via the Baltimore Sun. While it seemed to be a lengthy conversation, it ended with manager and player giving each other a high five, a sign of both sides’ approach to the situation.

Entering Sunday’s game, Alonso had made just one error in his Orioles career. He carries a career .993 fielding percentage over his eight seasons. Furthermore, he is a well established veteran who was clearly shaking his head in disappointment after the play. Albernaz didn’t have to remind him how bad of a blunder it was.

While Alonso is 0-for-3 on Sunday, Baltimore’s manager will be expecting him to make up for the defensive play with his bat down the line with his bat. He may be hitting just .229, but the first baseman has 10 home runs and 32 RBIs through his first 51 games with the Orioles. Alonso leads the Orioles in RBIs and is tied for first in home runs.

Now trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Alonso’s error could end up costing Baltimore the game. But at least he and Albernaz seem to be on the same page about what happened.
