Oliver Glasner told to show Crystal Palace more respect by ex-manager after outburst

Former Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew has blasted Oliver Glasner for disrespecting the club after his recent outburst.

Pardew, who played for Palace and managed them from 2015 to 2016, is not pleased with the way Glasner has spoken out.

The Austrian made some bombshell comments on Saturday after his side were beaten 2-1 by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

He raged that he had been ‘abandoned’ by the club after agreeing to sell captain Marc Guehi, with his squad running thin.

Glasner is not going to be sacked for his rant following a conversation with owner Steve Parish, but those close to the dressing room have told talkSPORT they believe he is trying to get fired.

Despite Parish allowing him to continue, Pardew disagrees with the way the 51-year-old has acted, pointing out a specific quote where he said: “These players deserve Oliver Glasner as their manager.”

“When you start talking about yourself in the third person like Glasner…he needs to show some respect to Crystal Palace,” the ex-Palace manager said on talkSPORT.

He added: “Okay, he’s done a brilliant job, there’s no doubt about that, he knows how to win Premier League games, he’s changed the system at the club, they’ve been an outstanding team.

“The team he put out on Saturday was good, by the way, I don’t think he was ravaged by injury, but they are tired as they’re in Europe.

“I do have sympathy, with Newcastle we went into it and didn’t have the squad big enough and it hurt us in the league.

“We had a terrible year and Glasner is too, they haven’t won in 10 games and they’re back in their natural position, they started well but they’re 13th, that’s where they always finish.”

Pardew then continued: “With Glasner, I’m not into it when you’re talking to yourself in the third person.

Oliver Glasner's bombshell rant

“A difficult result, difficult for me to accept. Not because of the performance, the players tried everything until the end. They’re leaving their heart on the pitch,” Glasner told talkSPORT on Saturday.

“But we feel that we are being abandoned completely. Selling our captain one day before a Premier League game.

“There was no understanding, we’re playing with 12, 13 players from our original squad for weeks now. That makes it so tough to accept.

“We had no substitution. I was looking on the bench, just kids there. That’s how it is, that’s why we are where we are.

“If your heart gets torn out twice a season, one day before a game, with Eze in summer and your captain now, I have just completely no understanding.

“I think the players deserve more support. That’s what they deserve.

“If a player gets fatigued, another one can come in. Who can help winning a game? Nobody who was sitting on the bench has Premier League experience.

“Nobody has played in this atmosphere. If we do it, to make a substitution is just hope.

“It just shows what is the ambition. If we feel 28 points, we will get these 10 points, not get relegated. You can act like this.

“This is my feeling. It’s now, we’re fine, we’re in the Conference League, let’s see how far it goes. Then, points is fine, we won’t get relegated, it’s all good.

“When I see the players, what they are investing, when I see my staff, what they are investing, then it just feels, yes, it would be nice if we get more support, definitely, yes.”

“I made that mistake earlier in my career, it sounds wrong…you’re putting yourself in a position like ‘You deserve me’…well yeah, okay.

“But at the end of the day, when you’re a football manager, you’re in control of the tactics of the team and motivation of the team, but you don’t own it, it’s not your money that’s invested in the team.

“So therefore, you’re an employee and to talk like that really is asking for trouble.”

Some sympathy

Pardew then discussed Glasner’s anger at losing captain Guehi to Manchester City the day before the loss to Sunderland.

“I do have sympathy with him for that,” Pardew admitted. “He lost Eze at the start of the year and yesterday that was painful.

“According to Oliver, he was doing set plays with Guehi in the team and then they get the shout that the deal is done and he needs to go…I can understand him throwing his toys out of the pram.”

Chance for success?

The ex-Palace boss then looked ahead to the future, and despite accusing Glasner of ‘disrespect’, he has high hopes should he stay.

“There’s no chance [that Palace will be relegated],” Pardew said.

“I think they’re going to win the Conference League and with this manager, I think he’s going to win another trophy.

“If they focus on that, I think it’s a great one for them to win.”
