Nick Wright believes Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is on verge of passing Dwyane Wade

Nick Wright decided to be bold with his take involving Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade as two of the greatest guards to ever play in the NBA.

Gilgeous-Alexander has flourished as one of the top stars in the entire league, winning his second consecutive MVP award. He intends on leading the Thunder to their second-ever championship, something he proudly pulled off by getting their first en route to winning Finals MVP last year.

Wright talked about Gilgeous-Alexander’s status on his all-time list for guards on the First Things First show. He currently has the star guard at ninth place, trailing Wade at the moment. However, if he leads Oklahoma City to back-to-back titles, Wright has him making the jump.

“It’s almost inarguable that if they [OKC] win the title, he leaps [Dwyane] Wade,” Wright said.

“If somebody says in a month that they win the title, he’s the fifth greatest guard ever, that it’s Jordan, Magic, Kobe, Steph, SGA. Do you think that’s at least a legitimate opinion, even if you don’t agree with it? So I do too. I think that is an allowable opinion, so to speak. If they win this title.”

What lies ahead for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Thunder

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will look forward to his resume when he calls it a career, but that won’t be for a long while.

Gilgeous-Alexander was remarkable throughout the 2025-26 campaign, taking part in 68 games. He averaged 31.1 points, 6.6 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game. He boasted shooting splits of 55.3% from the field, including 38.6% from beyond the arc, and 87.9% from the free-throw line.

In the playoffs, he is producing 29.1 points, 7.1 assists and three rebounds per game throughout Oklahoma City’s eight games. They are one series win away from returning to the NBA Finals for the second straight year, something the Golden State Warriors last pulled off during the mid-to-late 2010s.

Following the Thunder’s Game 1 clash against the San Antonio Spurs o May 18 at 8:30 p.m. ET, they prepare for Game 2. The contest takes place on May 20 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
