NFL Draft news: Drew Allar proved he wasn’t a ‘dope’ to NFC coach in interview

Former Penn State QB Drew Allar is coming off an injury as he heads into the draft. And he’s drawing interest from several teams. Furthering his cause, Allar proved he isn’t a “dope” during an interview with an NFC coach, according to a post on X by Tom Pelissero.

“Allar helped himself in interviews during the pre-draft process,” Pelissero wrote.

“I went into my Zoom interview with him thinking he’d be kind of a dope, like the things that were happening on film,” an NFC QBs coach said. “But he was incredible. Blew me away with his interview. His knowledge of what they did at Penn State, his ability to call plays, all of it. He’s got a chance to be like a Joe Flacco. He’s big, he’s strong, (and) he runs straight ahead fast.”

What does QB Drew Allar bring to the table?

There’s a lot to like about Allar, especially his wheels. He ran for 732 yards and 12 touchdowns in his college career.

However, repeatability in his play is a concern for some teams.

“The crazy part about it is, you could have back-to-back the same exact throw with him,” an AFC quarterbacks coach said. “And one time it looks excellent, like exactly how you would draw it up, and then it’s the same exact play, same coverage, same throw, and he looks completely different with his feet and his mechanics, and you’re just like, Why? What happened there?”

Allar doesn’t seem to have the pocket presence NFL teams want to see, even with mobile quarterbacks. And that flat-out scares some coaches.

“He hasn’t gotten better,” an AFC executive said. “But he’s definitely talented. And I guess maybe he’s a developmental player. I’ve been waiting for him to really become a guy for a few years now, and he’s kind of been the opposite of that.”

Allar ranks No. 6 at the position, according to NFL Draft Buzz. But he isn’t expected to be selected until Round 5 because of the less-than-stellar overall quarterback market.
