Blackburn gave Ismael his marching orders on Monday afternooon after 11 months in charge at the club following a winless run lasting nine matches, culminating in a 1-0 home defeat by Hull on Saturday afternoon, their four loss in five matches.

The Frenchman leaves Rovers with the side sat in the relegation zone, three points from safety but with a game in hand on West Brom directly above them.

Tony Mowbray is the current favourite to be the man tasked with maintain the club’s Championship status, nearly four years on from his departure from the club as manager following a five year stint at the Lancashire club.

The 62-year-old was previously at the helm when Blackburn secured promotion into the second tier in 2018, eventually leaving at the end of his contract after guiding Rovers to an eighth placed Championship finish in 2022.

The Yorkshireman, who’d previously been at Celtic, Middlesbrough and Coventry, has since managed at Sunderland, Birmingham and most recently, spent three months in charge of West Brom in the second half of last season, his second spell in charge of the side.
