Newcastle United vs Manchester United predictions and betting tips – Carrick’s side seek another win

Michael Carrick did it again on Sunday, overseeing yet another victory as Manchester United manager. His team are now up to third in the Premier League table.

Conversely, it was a disappointing weekend for Newcastle United. Will the Magpies bounce back on Wednesday, or will Carrick’s team march on towards the Champions League?

Newcastle United vs Manchester United predictions

Timing is everything in football.

Newcastle United finished fifth in the Premier League and won a trophy last season. Had Manchester United been looking for a manager back then, Eddie Howe would have been a strong contender.

Howe’s name was mentioned in relation to the United job soon after Ruben Amorim’s departure in January, but the idea has not been floated more recently.

There are two reasons for that. The first concerns Howe himself. He is not a worse manager now than he was six or 12 months ago. But his team are in poor form and that rarely reflects well on a head coach.

A 3-2 home defeat by Everton on Saturday has left Newcastle down in 13th place. In terms of both league positions and points, they are closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League places.

Newcastle are still alive in this season’s edition of Europe’s leading tournament, as well as in the FA Cup. But the Premier League is their bread and butter, and Newcastle have lost five out of their last six assignments in the top tier.

The other reason why Howe is not being spoken of as a Manchester United managerial target is the performance of the man who currently occupies that role.

When Michael Carrick was handed the reins in January, few could have anticipated him making such an instant impact.

On his watch, United have taken 19 points from the last 21 available. They are now third in the table and in an excellent position to qualify for the Champions League. If United keep this sort of form up, it is hard to see Carrick not getting the job on a full-time basis.

Some have damned the former Middlesbrough boss with faint praise, arguing he has merely done the obvious at Old Trafford by switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation, playing Bruno Fernandes as a No.10 and deploying Kobbie Mainoo in the starting XI.

But all those things are decisions in themselves, and Carrick deserves credit for removing his own ego from the situation and making the right calls whether or not they are perceived as basic.

United did not have everything their own way on Sunday. They were disappointing in the first half against Crystal Palace and found themselves behind at the break. In the second half, though, they showed spirit and character to turn the situation around.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United betting tips

Newcastle United will entertain Manchester United in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Another United win?

Manchester United have the bit between their teeth at the moment. Newcastle United do not.

The worrying thing for Howe’s side right now is that they are not even winning matches at St James’ Park.

For a while Newcastle’s home record was the one thing they could rely on. No longer: the Magpies have lost three in a row in front of their own supporters. Overall, they rank 12th in the Premier League home table.

Carrick’s team are full of confidence and that will count for plenty on Wednesday evening. Expect Manchester United to march on.

United have last word

Manchester United did not start particularly well against Crystal Palace, but two second-half goals saw them win 2-1.

In time-honoured United fashion, Carrick’s team are finishing matches strongly. In each of his seven league games in charge, the Red Devils have scored the final goal of the game.

That includes a winner in second-half stoppage time, an equaliser in the same period, and three other strikes after the 75th minute.

Newcastle United, on the other hand, have conceded the last goal in five of their last six Premier League fixtures.

Sesko to score again

It is fair to say Benjamin Sesko did not make an immediate impression at Manchester United.

But now that the Slovenia international has found his feet in the Premier League, he is starting to show what he is capable of.

Sesko has now scored in four of his last five outings, earning himself a role in the starting XI in the process.

His thumping header won the match for United against Crystal Palace, and Sesko is likely to be integral again as Carrick’s team head to the northeast in the midweek round of fixtures.
