Newcastle United vs Everton predictions and betting tips – Both teams in fight for Europe

Newcastle United are struggling for consistency in the Premier League. They may soon turn their focus to the Champions League and the FA Cup, but they cannot afford to entirely neglect the top flight.

Everton have had more joy on the road than at their new home this season. Will it be another happy away day this weekend?

Newcastle United vs Everton predictions

Newcastle United secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday night. Next up for the Magpies is a two-legged tie against Chelsea or Barcelona next month.

March will also see Newcastle face Manchester City in the fifth round of the FA Cup, a tournament the club have not won since 1955.

Most Newcastle fans want to see Eddie Howe’s team turn their attention to those two competitions. The Magpies won the EFL Cup last season, a moment their supporters will never forget. Triumphing in the FA Cup would be an even greater achievement.

A run to the latter stages of the Champions League would also make this a memorable campaign. Newcastle have already gone further than ever before in Europe’s foremost competition. A quarter-final or semi-final at St James’ Park would be electric.

Newcastle are ready to refocus on other competitions because they have had a frustrating time of it in the Premier League.

Going into this weekend’s meeting with Everton, Howe’s men are 11th in the table – below Brentford, Bournemouth and Fulham, as well as their next opponents.

They have been hamstrung by inconsistency for most of the campaign. Newcastle have won three times in a row just once. Aside from that period around the turn of the year, there is only one other occasion on which the Magpies have won back-to-back league matches.

The problem is, Newcastle have not been inconsistent so much as downright bad in recent weeks. Four of their last five games have ended in defeat. Only Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur have collected fewer points in that time.

However, it would be a mistake for Newcastle to write off the Premier League entirely. For one, you cannot switch form on and off like a tap. Taking things easy in the league before trying to get yourself up for a European or FA Cup tie is a recipe for disaster.

Secondly, it is important for a club like Newcastle to be involved in some form of continental competition, even if it is not the Champions League. Howe’s side should target a top-eight finish at a minimum.

Everton are in the same conversation. A point and a place outside the top eight as things stand, European qualification would be an excellent achievement in David Moyes’ first full campaign back on Merseyside.

Newcastle United vs Everton betting tips

Newcastle United and Everton, two teams in the mix for Europe, go head-to-head this weekend.

Honours even in northeast

Everton went down to a 1-0 defeat by Manchester United at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday night.

It is fair to say the Toffees are still getting used to their new home. Only six sides in the division have a worse record in front of their own fans.

Conversely, Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa are the only teams to have collected more points on the road than Everton.

Moyes’ men can get something from this match, but Newcastle should have enough to avoid defeat. A draw is the way to go at St James’ Park.

Goals at a premium

Howe will be concerned about the goals and chances his team have been giving up over the last few weeks.

In four of their last five league matches, Newcastle United have conceded at least twice. Their last home win was back on January 7, and even then the Magpies shipped three goals to Leeds United.

Newcastle must tighten up as soon as possible. That is likely to be a priority against Everton this weekend.

In Moyes’ team’s last 12 Premier League outings, there have been under 2.5 goals on nine occasions. That is our second suggested wager for this match.

Wissa back in XI?

Perhaps Newcastle United would be higher up the table if Yoane Wissa had been fit for the entire season.

The former Brentford frontman, who was essentially signed as the replacement for Alexander Isak last summer, has made only 11 appearances in the Premier League.

A return of one goal in that time is disappointing, but Wissa is bound to come good. He showed his quality at Brentford, after all.

With a return to the starting XI a distinct possibility this weekend, do not be surprised if the 29-year-old gets his name on the scoresheet.
