New footage shows Victor Osimhen moved to tears as Galatasaray fans unfurl heart-warming tifo

Victor Osimhen was reduced to tears when Galatasaray fans honoured the striker’s late mother with a tifo before Tuesday’s 1-0 win against Liverpool.

The Nigerian was preparing for the Champions League last-16 first-leg tie when a huge banner depicting him and his mother was unfurled at Rams Park.

The stunning design showed the striker side by side with his children with his mother smiling back at them alongside the words: “We are family, and family is everything.”

His mum, Christiana, sadly passed away when he was just three years old.

Overcome with emotion

After catching a glimpse of the tifo, cameras immediately panned in on a visibly moved Osimhen.

Tears could be seen on his face but Osimhen quickly composed himself ready for kick off.

And it was business as usual once Osimhen had dusted himself down, with an assist for teammate Mario Lemina.

The Turkish champions took just seven minutes to open the scoring thanks to Lemina’s close-range finish.

It proved to be the only goal but it could have been even worse when Osimhen’s second-half effort was ruled out for offside.

Osimhen’s heroics against the Reds means he has produced ten goal involvements (seven goals, three assists) in just nine Champions League appearances this term.

The win puts Galatasaray in a strong position heading to Anfield for the second leg next Wednesday.

Osimhen could be the key to the Turkish side pulling off a famous win over the Premier League champions.

He has netted 18 goals in 27 games across all competitions this season and 55 in 68 since his arrival in Istanbul.

The 27-year-old has been a revelation since his arrival from Napoli on an initial loan deal in 2024 which was made permanent last summer.

Osimhen’s response to fans

Speaking to Galatasaray’s club media after Tuesday’s win, Osimhen said: “I’ve been very happy since I arrived wearing this jersey.

“This jersey is very special. I wanted to do my best for these fans. I’m experiencing completely different emotions here.

“I lost my mother at a young age, and the fans made me very happy today . That’s why it’s so important to me. We are a family with the Galatasaray fans.”

And he had words of praise for his teammates who got the better of Arne Slot’s side for the second time this season after a 1-0 win in the league phase.

“We did a very good job today. I think we can hurt Liverpool in the return match. We’ve done a good job so far.”

Meanwhile, Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk urged caution ahead of the second leg.

He said: “The score was similar to the first match, but the game wasn’t like the first one.

“Liverpool is a huge club, full of quality players. We did what we had to do here. We won. But it’s not over. The second match is at their home ground and another very difficult match awaits us.”
