NBA rumors: ClutchPoints’ insider wants Spurs to trade De’Aaron Fox for Trey Murphy III, Jordan Poole

The NBA Finals are in full swing, and to this point it hasn’t been a good showing for San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox. Following the Spurs’ collapse in Game 4, Fox came under heavy criticism for his late-game decision to try and score while being pursued by Knicks defenders instead of simply trying to dribble out the clock. With the Spurs on the verge of elimination, could they do the inconceivable and explore the trade market for De’Aaron Fox?

According to ClutchPoints’ NBA insider Brett Siegel, that’s exactly what the Spurs need to do. Last offseason, the team signed Fox to a hefty $229 million extension that runs through the 2029-30 season. That extension, combined with young guards on the team seemingly surpassing him, are the key reasons why Siegel believes the Spurs should engage the New Orleans Pelicans on a potential trade this offseason.

“De’Aaron Fox has basically played himself into a scenario where the Spurs really need to consider his future this offseason. But at the same time, you signed him to this $220 million extension that is probably the worst contract in the NBA right now when you’re looking at it, given the Spurs situation,” Siegel said during a recent episode of ‘Clutch Scoops.’

“He is not the number one guard on this team anymore, it’s Stephon Castle. He’s probably not even the number two guard anymore because of Dylan Harper … if I’m the Spurs I’m going right to the Pelicans and I’m saying, ‘I’m giving you De’Aaron Fox, three or four first-round picks for Trey Murphy and give me Jordan Poole.”

Given the financial implications with the dreaded second apron, the Spurs might have to make some decisions moving forward contract-wise. With Stephon Castle emerging as a lead guard and Dylan Harper also gunning for a starting spot, the Spurs could take Siegel’s lead and look to address other roster needs with Fox as potential trade bait.
