NBA rumors: Are Magic actually in on Giannis trade? New intel hints at pursuit

Trade speculation involving Giannis Antetokounmpo took another turn Friday after a new report suggested the Orlando Magic remain involved in discussions surrounding the Milwaukee Bucks superstar despite reporting a day earlier indicating otherwise.

On Thursday, Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reported that the Magic, Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors were no longer actively involved in recent trade talks for Antetokounmpo. Fischer wrote that there had not been any significant recent dialogue between Orlando and Milwaukee despite the longstanding connections between the organizations.

However, a new report from The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Eric Nehm indicates the Magic remain one of the teams being monitored as the Bucks evaluate their options.

“Per league and team sources, the Bucks appear to be seeking clarity from several suitors as to what they would actually be willing to offer before making a final decision,” Amick and Nehm wrote.

“The Boston Celtics, Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic, the sources say, are known to be among them.”

The report suggests Milwaukee is still gathering information from interested teams before determining whether it will ultimately move forward with a trade involving the two-time MVP.

Orlando has frequently surfaced in Antetokounmpo speculation because of its ties to the Bucks star. Magic president Jeff Weltman and senior advisor John Hammond were both part of Milwaukee’s front office when Antetokounmpo was selected with the No. 15 overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. The organization also recently hired Sean Sweeney as head coach after he spent several years working closely with Antetokounmpo as a Bucks assistant.

Earlier this season, HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto reported that the Magic had explored acquiring Antetokounmpo before the trade deadline. Orlando was also linked to the two-time MVP by former Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva, who predicted that the Magic could emerge as a destination if Milwaukee ultimately decides to move its franchise star.

Any potential deal would likely require the Magic to part with significant assets. Orlando possesses one of the league’s most promising young cores led by Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Anthony Black, though the organization has consistently emphasized building around that foundation.

The latest report does not indicate that a trade is imminent, nor does it clarify how aggressive Orlando has been in recent discussions. Instead, it highlights the evolving nature of Antetokounmpo’s market as Milwaukee continues evaluating its future.

The Miami Heat remain widely viewed as a leading contender if Antetokounmpo becomes available, while the Boston Celtics continue to be linked to the former MVP through recent reports of mutual intrigue.

For now, Antetokounmpo remains with the Bucks. Yet the differing reports from Thursday and Friday illustrate just how fluid the situation remains as one of the NBA’s biggest offseason storylines continues to unfold.
