‘My heart’s breaking’ – Mike Tirico shares emotional message about Savannah Guthrie before Super Bowl and Olympics call

Mike Tirico said his heart is ‘breaking’ for NBC and Winter Olympics colleague Savannah Guthrie.

Tirico, who is set to call Super Bowl LX and serve as a primetime host for the upcoming 2026 Olympics in Italy, shared an emotional message about Guthrie.

“My heart’s breaking, our hearts are breaking,” Tirico told talkSPORT on Tuesday during an NBC Sports media event in San Francisco.

“It’s been a pit in the stomach 36 hours since we found out. I just can’t believe the situation.”

Guthrie, who also hosts NBC’s Today Show, was forced to place her Winter Olympics coverage hosting plans on pause during the ongoing search for her missing 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie.

She had been set to co-host NBC’s broadcast of the Opening Ceremonies on Friday with Terry Gannon of NBC Sports.

“Savannah will not be joining us at the Olympics as she focuses on being with her family during this difficult time,” an NBC Sports spokesperson said in a statement.

“Our hearts are with her and the entire Guthrie family as the search continues for their mother. We will share additional information about our Opening Ceremony coverage plans soon.”

Guthrie was originally scheduled to fly to Italy to co-host NBC’s coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics, which will primarily occur in Milan and Cortina.

Yet the longtime ‘Today’ host instead traveled to Tucson, Arizona during the search for her mother, whom authorities believe was taken against her will.

Past Olympic connection between Tirico and Guthrie

Tirico praised Guthrie and the Today Show crew.

“I’m lucky enough to work multiple Olympics with Savannah and get to know the Today Show team, even sit in for Craig (Melvin) for a few days this past year,” Tirico said.

“I just hold those people in the highest professional, the highest personal regard. What you see on the set of the Today Show is real.

“Those people are special people and we’re just heart heartbroken and devastated, and praying for Savannah and her entire family through this difficult time.”

United States President Donald Trump told reporters on Tuesday that he planned to phone Guthrie and called the situation “terrible.”

“I always got along very good with Savannah,” Trump said.

Less than a week away from calling Super Bowl LX between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahaws with game analyst Cris Collinsworth, and then pulling double duty with the Winter Olympics, Tirico made it clear that Guthrie and her family were in his thoughts in San Francisco.

“Obviously this is a time for caring about the people in your family and we are holding Savannah near and dear to our heart, and we are praying for all of them,” Tirico said.

“If you do pray, please include them because, special people, nobody should be going through something like this.”

Guthrie, 54, was set to announce her fourth Olympics for NBC.

She joined the Today Show in 2011.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support,” Guthrie told the Today Show in a statement.

“Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.”
