MLB rumors: Mets rivals think season is cooked, ready to pounce on 3 top trade chips

The New York Mets have had an abysmal first month and a half of the 2026 MLB season, currently sitting at 15-24 ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Mets came into this season with legitimate championship expectations, and although injuries have played a role, they have still fallen far below fans’ expectations in 2026.

Recently, MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that “…executives and scouts believe the Mets just don’t have the personnel to turn it around, putting out lineups that look more suited to rebuilding teams than the most expensive team in baseball.”

With this being the case, it might be time for Mets fans to start firing up trade machines.

“…the Mets soon may be the center of attention once they realize that this season is a lost cause, letting their rivals know they are open for business. They have three of the top trade chips in the game in starters Freddy Peralta and Clay Holmes and infielder Bo Bichette,” reported Nightengale.

Bichette was thought to be one of the best free agent signings on the market this past offseason, joining New York from the reigning AL Champion Toronto Blue Jays, but his tenure with the Mets has been a disaster thus far, hitting just two home runs and 16 RBI’s and batting .237.

It remains to be seen how big a hit his trade value has taken, especially considering the monster contract that he’s on, but Holmes and Peralta should both have plenty of interested suitors on the open market should the Mets start picking up the phone.

In the meantime, the Mets will next hit the field on Sunday at 4:10 pm ET against the Diamondbacks.
