Mets have not decided if they will buy or sell at trade deadline

The New York Mets have underperformed during the 2026 MLB season. There is no question about that. While the Mets have dealt with injury trouble, many stars have not played up to expectations. Although they are currently in last place in the National League East standings, the ball club has not decided if it will buy or sell at the trade deadline yet.

“David Stearns said there will obviously come a time before the trade deadline at which the Mets will have to decide to buy or sell, but that they don’t think they’re ‘anywhere close to that’ point yet,” Chelsea Janes of SNY reported.

Stearns, the Mets’ president of baseball operations, clearly wants to see if the team can bounce back and make a push in the standings over the next couple of months. It is an understandable strategy since there is plenty of baseball left to be played before the trade deadline. At 23-33 overall and 14.5 games out of first place in the NL East, though, the Mets need to figure things out as soon as possible.

It remains to be seen how aggressive the Mets would be even if they do decide to sell. One has to imagine they will not enter a complete rebuild given all of the talent on their roster, but anything is possible.

For now, New York is focused on its upcoming series against the Miami Marlins. The first contest of the three-game series is scheduled for Friday night at 7:10 PM EST in New York.
