Mets’ Carlos Mendoza addresses need for Juan Soto’s supporting cast to step up
As New York Mets star Juan Soto had an impressive Thursday in the team’s 5-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, manager Carlos Mendoza would be asked an interesting question regarding the star’s impact. While the Mets’ struggles have been apparent this season, there’s no denying Soto’s output is vital, with Mendoza emphasizing it.
Speaking after New York’s win over the Cardinals, where Soto had a key home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the team the victory, Mendoza would be asked where the team would be without the 27-year-old.
“It’s a good question,” Mendoza said, via SNY Mets. “I mean, he’s a special player, and I mean, he is who he is, but obviously, we need some of the other guys to step up as well, I mean, he went cold here. I think it was good to see him have a nice day today, but he was in the middle of a stretch here where I don’t know, it was a week or so, when he was having a hard time, and we kind of felt it a little bit.”
“Some of the other guys pick him up, especially in San Diego, but it was just good to see today,” Mendoza continued. “I mean, that homer there, tough left on left matchup, [JoJo] Romero is not an easy matchup for lefties, and for him to take him deep like that, you know, it’s like I say, a special player, but we need every single guy in that room.”

Mets’ Juan Soto looks to turn around the team’s disappointing season
At any rate, Soto had a .277 batting average heading into Thursday’s game, as he now has 15 home runs and 32 RBIs. It remains to be seen if Soto’s impact can turn around the Mets, as after the win against the Cardinals, the team has a 30-38 record, which puts them last in the AL East.
Despite the win, New York lost the series to the Cardinals, but looks to bring in some winning ways with the next series starting on Friday against the Atlanta Braves.
