Marlins gives veteran pitcher the boot 2 days after getting wrecked by Phillies

The Miami Marlins just lost three of the last four games to the Philadelphia Phillies. On Sunday, it was a disastrous performance from Chris Paddack, giving up seven runs in just 2 and 2/3 innings of work.

Now, the Marlins have made a move regarding the veteran pitcher, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

“The Marlins have designated RHP Chris Paddack for assignment,” Rosenthal posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Being designated for assignment means that Paddack has been removed from the 40-man roster and is not eligible to play for the MLB club. The player can be traded, placed on outright or unconditional release waivers by their team. If the player is claimed off waivers by another club, he is immediately added to their 40-man roster. If Paddack clears waivers, he has enough service time, so he can reject assignment to the minor leagues.

The Marlins veteran is 0-5 in six starts so far this year, with a 7.63 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP. He signed a one-year contract worth $4 million before the 2026 season. This was the second stint with the Marlins franchise. Paddack was drafted by the team in the eighth round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He would initially pitch at the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Marlins before starting the 2016 season with Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers.

Paddack was traded during the 2016 season to the San Diego Padres, working his way through the system and making his MLB debut with the club in 2019. Since then, he has pitched with the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers as well.

Meanwhile, the Marlins are 16-19 on the season, which places them in second in the NL East. They open up a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.
