Marlins’ 10th inning explosion vs. Rays makes history not seen since 2012

The Miami Marlins entered Saturday overhearing Sandy Alcantara trade rumblings. They made that chatter an afterthought in a big, historic way against the Tampa Bay Rays. The kind of MLB history not seen since 2012.

Miami and Tampa walked into the 10th inning tied at 2-2. But one run after another erupted on the side of Miami. The Marlins tacked on an astonishing eight runs in that inning alone, taking the 10-5 win.

Miami now joins the 2012 Colorado Rockies as the last team to accomplish such a feat. They also join the 2025 San Francisco Giants and 2022 Oakland Athletics to score 8+ in extra innings since the runner on second run got created by the MLB.

Designated hitter Liam Hicks broke the tie first for Miami. Hicks smacked a four-seam fastball toward right field for the single, driving two runners home to make it 4-2. Shortstop Otto Lopez blasted a sacrifice fly ball that brought second baseman Xavier Edwards home, making it 5-2.

First baseman Connor Norby singled to left field by taking advantage of the 89 miles per hour slider. Javier Sanoja chipped a double to left field next, scoring three of his teammates to make it 9-2. The third baseman topped off the scoring following Esteury Ruiz’s line drive toward left field.

Alcantara again pitched amid the MLB Trade Deadline talk hovering above him. He surrendered seven hits in six innings but struck out six Rays batters.

Miami improved to 21-25 overall. But the Marlins broke out of their offensive slump from the last two games, scoring no more than two runs before Saturday.
