Mariners’ Bryan Woo is ‘tired of sucking’ after another disaster vs. Orioles

The Seattle Mariners (36-34) have spent the last five years teetering between elation and heartbreak, so every key player must perform competently. Bryan Woo led the M’s in strikeouts and innings pitched last season, and despite suffering a pectoral injury late in the year, he was a huge reason why the franchise won its first divisional title since 2001. Conversely, the All-Star right-hander is one of the reasons why the club is currently hovering around .500.

Woo once again blew up on the road, as he allowed seven runs on seven hits in Thursday’s 7-5 loss versus the Baltimore Orioles. Much of the trouble occurred in the third, where the 26-year-old surrendered home runs to Colton Cowser and Pete Alonso, and six runs total. He frequently endures a disastrous inning in his starts, making it difficult for the squad to gain or sustain momentum. This is now the fourth time this year that Woo has given up five or more runs.

He is fed up with the struggles. “I’m getting pretty tired of trying to come up with reasons or excuses,” the 2021 sixth-round draft selection said, per Adam Jude of The Seattle Times. “Just tired of sucking like this. I don’t have the answers. I’m looking for ’em.”

Bryan Woo must solve the riddle of his follies away from home, but he will mercifully make his next start in T-Mobile Park. A second crack at the Orioles should theoretically go much better. Though, it cannot get much worse than what transpired in Camden Yards on Thursday.

Woo has recorded a 4.28 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 82 innings of work this season.
