Defensive coordinators who oversee dominant units often find themselves in the conversation for head coaching vacancies. Lou Anarumo, the Indianapolis Colts‘ defensive coordinator, has become exactly that kind of candidate following his group’s impressive performance this season. Ahead of the Colts’ matchup against the Houston Texans, Anarumo addressed the speculation directly and spoke candidly about his future.

“I’d be lying to you if I said that down the road that wasn’t something that would be a career goal, but my full attention is on the Houston Texans,” Anarumo said. “And they better be, because they’re a really good football team. While I appreciate all that stuff, my main — and sole — focus is on the Texans this week.”

The head coaching interest surrounding Anarumo carries legitimate weight. He has transformed a competitive defense into one that excels at the most critical metric: keeping opponents off the scoreboard.

Heading into Week 13, the Indianapolis Colts rank ninth in points allowed at 20.8 per game, despite their yardage numbers falling in the league’s lower third. The unit’s dominance has proven instrumental in the Colts’ 8-3 record and their position atop the AFC South.

A year ago, Anarumo’s situation looked dire. Cincinnati’s defense had collapsed under his watch, and despite the Bengals possessing an offense capable of scoring with any team, they missed the playoffs. Zac Taylor moved on from him, bringing in Al Golden to lead the unit.

Anarumo’s opportunity seemed limited until Indianapolis called, offering him a chance to take over for Gus Bradley and restore the defense. His resurgence with the Colts has reignited conversation about his head coaching prospects.

Now, after orchestrating this defensive turnaround, many are questioning whether this rebound could put him back in the mix for a head coaching job. Whether he would actually pursue such an opportunity remains uncertain, but his performance suggests he has firmly positioned himself back in consideration.
