LIV Golf lose another major winner as ex-Masters champion follows Brooks Koepka to PGA Tour

Patrick Reed has confirmed he is returning to the PGA Tour after four years with LIV Golf.

The former Masters champion is set to make his comeback in August after leaving the Saudi-backed league.

Reed becomes the second player to ditch LIV Golf in order to return to the PGA Tour this month after Brooks Koepka.

The American is aiming to regain his membership ahead of the 2027 season but will be able to play in events this year as a non-member.

As he resigned his membership before violating PGA Tour regulations by appearing in LIV events, Reed is eligible to return on August 25.

It will allow the 35-year-old to take part in the tour’s FedEx Cup fall events, starting with the Biltmore Championship in September.

Reed is eligible to accept sponsor exemptions or come through open qualifying for the eight tournaments which follow the Tour Championship.

Outside of majors, Reed has not appeared at a PGA Tour event since the Memorial Tournament in June 2022, having signed with LIV Golf later that month.

PGA Tour statement

In a statement, the PGA Tour said: “Patrick Reed has informed the PGA Tour of his desire to return.

“A nine-time PGA Tour winner, he is seeking reinstatement of his PGA Tour membership for the 2027 season, playing out of the past champion category.

“As a result of resigning his membership in 2022 prior to violating any PGA Tour Regulations, Patrick is eligible to compete on the PGA Tour as a non-member beginning on August 25, 2026.

“He may also pursue improved PGA Tour status via the DP World Tour.

“Similar to anyone reinstated under the Returning Member Program, any former PGA Tour member returning to the PGA Tour would be ineligible for participation in the Player Equity Program through 2030.”

Meanwhile, Reed released a statement of his own, adding: “I am excited to announce that I am returning to the PGA Tour as a past champion member for the 2027 season and am eligible to begin competing in PGA Tour events later this year.

“I will continue to compete and play as an Honorary Lifetime Member on the DP World Tour, which is something that I am truly honoured and excited to do.”

Reed has won nine PGA Tour events during his career, including his triumph at the Masters in 2018.

The last of those victories came at the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open.

News of his PGA Tour comeback comes after weeks of hints Reed could make a return following Koepka’s decision.
