Kentucky Derby 2026 betting: Odds, contenders and tips plus full entry list at Churchill Downs

The 2026 Kentucky Derby is finally here and the world famous race held at Churchill Downs promises over £2.2million for the winner.

It’s the highlight of the meeting on Saturday in a packed weekend meeting where on Derby day every race is a Graded contest.

The famous race is held in high regard around the world where the race contributes to the illustrious US Triple Crown: The Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.

13 horses have won all three including Secretariat and most recently Justify in 2018.

Kentucky Derby 2026: Odds

The Kentucky Derby is renowned for being a particularly tough puzzle to solve, with 20 runners set to take the field in the southern US state.

And the odds can often be a big indication, especially in the lead up to the race where big favourites shorten in price as more punters bet on them.

However, this year it’s still wide open and looking to be a close one between four favourites: Renegade, Commandment, Further Ado and Chief Wallabee.

  • Renegade 9/2
  • Commandment 5/1
  • Further Ado 6/1
  • Chief Wallabee 7/1
  • The Puma 10/1
  • Emerging Market 14/1
  • So Happy 14/1
  • Danon Bourbon 20/1
  • Potente 20/1
  • Fulleffort 25/1
  • Incredibolt 25/1
  • Albus 33/1
  • Golden Tempo 33/1
  • Litmus Test 33/1
  • Pavlovian 33/1
  • Wonder Dean 33/1
  • Intrepido 40/1
  • Right To Party 50/1
  • Robusta 50/1
  • Great White 66/1
  • Six Speed 66/1
  • Corona De Oro 100/1
  • Ocelli 100/1

Kentucky Derby 2026: Contenders

The key contenders truly are at the front of the market but of course there are some angles for some bigger priced each-way plays.

It’s rare for a favourite to win the Kentucky Derby too, including each of the last seven renewals.

Rich Strike won it in 2022 with a payout of $163.60, Sovereignty last year $17.96 and the last to win at short odds was Justify in 2018 winning at $7.80.

Renegade

The favourite by a narrow margin currently is Renegade trained by Todd Pletcher and will be ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr.

Renegade has won two races in his career, the last two and probably the most crucial – winning at Tampa Bay Downs in February by a wide margin before landing the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park in March by four lengths.

Pletcher has won the Kentucky Derby before but hasn’t done so since 2017, having also scooped it with Super Saver in 2010.

Commandment

The Brad Cox-trained horse has been impressive going unbeaten in three races. Each of his last two races in Grade 2 and then Grade 1 company have been by the smallest of margins, but crucially has got the job done regardless.

Luis Saez gets the mount and this horse last had Flavien Prat on board, who will instead ride Emerging Market.

Trainer Cox won this race for owners Juddmonte in 2021 and now aims for another Derby for owners Wathnan Racing.

He beat Chief Wallabee by a neck in February before winning again to that horse who’s 7/1 by then half a length which only boldens his chances to beat him again.

Potente

One that appeals at a huge price that could be a big contender is Potente trained by Bob Baffert.

The trainer knows how to aim for this race and acquired this horse for $2.4million and there’s a chance he should improve massively here having not quite been up to scratch in his races so far.

Kentucky Derby 2026: Tips

Further Ado

I do like Further Ado a lot, despite the Brad Cox-trained runner being one of the four frontrunners.

He won at Churchill already back in November 2025 winning the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes.

He reappeared at Tampa Bay in March beaten by The Puma by 3/4 of a length before winning the Blue Grass Stakes with absolute ease.

It was expected Further Ado would win being the 17/20 favourite but to win this comfortably and of course showed potential behind The Puma.
