Julius Erving drops mic with NBA Slam Dunk Contest suggestion that could save it

The once-popular NBA Slam Dunk Contest is now on its way toward irrelevance. However, NBA great Julius Erving has come up with a mic-dropping suggestion to save the contest. Erving, 50, is the first-ever Slam Dunk contest winner and recently opened up to TMZ with a way of saving it. When asked about his way of bringing it back and his opinion on making most players participate in the Slam Dunk contest mandatory.

“You can’t make it mandatory because it’s something that they got to volunteer to do. And it’d be nice if some of the stars would step up. Have a conscience in terms of the history of the Slam Dunk contest. You know, I was the original one way back in 1976. So, some of them, they weren’t even born. So, they don’t know. So they don’t know they don’t know the total history,” he said while emphasizing how players should be educated about the contest’s history.

“And once you learn the history, which you’re going to put it out in the universe when you get your, you know, video launched, right [to TMZ]? You’re going to let some of the some of the stars know that they should participate,” he added.

“Dr.J” added that the players make too much money to be wanting to do anything nowadays. “Not mandatory. They should can’t make people do stuff these days. They make too much money to make them do anything. Sometimes they don’t even want to play.”

While several notable players such as Zach LaVine, Aaron Gordon, and Mac McClung have participated in the contest, it is interesting to know that stars such as LeBron James, Ja Morant, Allen Iverson, and Shaquille O’Neal have never participated in the contest.
