Inter Milan told to sign Tottenham star despite Italy icon defending player he’d replace

Inter Milan have been told Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario should be ‘front row’ if they replace Yann Sommer in the summer.

That’s the view of Italy icon Walter Zenga, who also stuck up for the Swiss international at the San Siro.

The 37-year-old’s form has oscillated this season, and there had been reports that manager Cristian Chivu was considering dropping him.

However, with his contract ending in the summer, Sommer is still seeing his future spoken about.

Serie A is a league well-regarded for its goalkeepers, with the Italy national team rarely without an elite option between the sticks.

One of those gargantuan glovesmen, Zenga, was asked about Sommer’s form, but insists he has no major concern.

“First of all, a premise: if we focus on a goalkeeper’s mistakes, we’ll never get over them. Yann is a high-performance player, a guarantee. He has experience and quality to spare,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Asked further about what he liked about the veteran, he added: “Self-control. Nothing can affect him.”

With Sommer’s future in doubt, there is talk about who should replace him at the San Siro.

And Zenga, who made 473 appearances for Internazionale, has given his take on who should come in.

He responded: “With an Italian goalkeeper: Vicario and Marco Carnesecchi in the front row, then Elia Caprile.”

Vicario, a £17.2million signing, has been Tottenham’s No.1 since club legend Hugo Lloris left in 2023.

Zenga has also coached in both Italy and England in a lengthy career in the game[/caption]

After an incredibly strong start to life in north London, the Italian’s poor distribution and lack of physicality have caused him issues in England.

Meanwhile, a broken bone in his ankle saw him miss three months of action last season.

Carnesecchi is Atalanta’s star shot-stopper, making the No.1 spot his own in Bergamo over the last three campaigns.

Caprile, though, was once on the books at Leeds United without making a single appearance and is now coming to the fore at Cagliari.

Since leaving Elland Road in 2022, he’s played for Bari, Napoli, and Empoli, as well as the Sardinian side.

All three of those shot-stoppers linked with Inter by Zenga are in contention to be in Italy’s squad for their World Cup qualification play-off with Northern Ireland on March 26.
