Insider calls out Victor Wembanyama’s ‘fear in eyes’ after Game 4 free throw choke

The San Antonio Spurs’ four-hour return flight must be awkward after their unprecedented collapse against the New York Knicks in Game 4 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.

It seemed like the fourth quarter was a mere formality for the Spurs as they held a 20-point lead. But the Knicks chipped away at the advantage before completing the biggest comeback in finals history and moving a win away from claiming their first title since 1973.

The Spurs had the chance to take a three-point lead with only 1:47 left in the final period after Victor Wembanyama was sent to the free-throw line. He, however, muffed both attempts. He was 4-of-5 from the charity stripe before those crucial misses.

Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin O’Connor called out Wembanyama over the Spurs’ monumental meltdown.

“A total choke job by Wembanyama last night. Had fear in his eyes at the line when he bricked both free throws,” wrote O’Connor.

“Seems (De’Aaron) Fox is taking most of the criticism for his dumb decisions. But Wemby blew it again too, somehow, and unfathomably even worse than the pass off (Stephon) Castle’s back.”

He was referring to Wembanyama’s costly error in Game 2, which allowed the Knicks to steal the win by one point.

The 22-year-old center had a strong start in Game 4, even talking smack to Mitchell Robinson. The Spurs, however, failed to close out the Knicks, who trailed by as much as 29 points.

According to NBA statistician Keerthika Uthayakumar, San Antonio was 2-of-14 at the rim, including Wembanyama’s 1-of-8, in the second half.

Wembanyama finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks. He shot 9-of-25 from the field.

The Spurs will try to stay alive in Game 5 at Frost Bank Center on Saturday.
