Hurricanes’ Rod Brind’Amour wants to give back to fans with Stanley Cup run
It has been almost 20 years since Rod Brind’Amour captained the Carolina Hurricanes to their first Stanley Cup championship victory. Although the franchise has suffered through plenty of agony in the last two decades, the passion that the former center helped instill in this community still burns brightly today. Brind’Amour intends to reward Raleigh for its patience and loyalty, but this time he is aiming to do so from the bench.
Now just one win away from returning to the Stanley Cup Final, the Hurricanes head coach is expressing his gratitude for those who have been rooting for him and his squad through a number of stinging postseason defeats. He is not planning a parade just yet, however.
“We haven’t accomplished anything, we still have a lot of work ahead of us, but the people down there, they deserve a good team and they’ve had it for a while,” Brind’Amour said, per NHL.com’s Dan Rosen. “It would mean a lot to the people that have supported this group for going through a lot of ups and downs. That’s any fanbase really, but ours in particular have been there night in and night out.”
Carolina, who has been eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals three times since the 2018-19 season, holds a commanding 3-1 series lead over the Montreal Canadiens entering Friday’s matchup in the Lenovo Center. Rod Brind’Amour and his aggressive team plan to give the home crowd a long-awaited celebration, but they expect the feisty Habs to bite back.
The only proper way to commemorate the 20-year anniversary of the best Hurricanes campaign ever is to simply recreate it on the ice. The puck drops at 8 p.m. ET.
