Hurricanes’ Brandon Bussi is just another guy when he’s not taking over Stanley Cup Final

Three and a half years after joining the Boston Bruins’ AHL affiliate, undrafted goalie Brandon Bussi made his NHL debut for the Carolina Hurricanes last October. He made his first Stanley Cup Playoffs start on Tuesday, which just so happened to be Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final. Despite wobbling at times, this 27-year-old underdog did enough to help his team tie the series. Two days later, he did enough to propel the Canes to the precipice of NHL immortality.

Bussi surrendered just two goals on 25 shots against in a 4-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights, adding to his brief yet incredibly impressive postseason mythology. He showed notable grit in T-Mobile Arena, and he followed it up with a standout showing in the Lenovo Center on Thursday. Given the magnitude of these achievements, it is all too easy to get a big head. The Sound Beach, New York native is not breaking his routine, however.

He thrives in normalcy, and that includes watching some streaming television at home after a hard-fought battle on the ice.

“Probably get on the couch and try to find something on Netflix or Peacock or Hulu,” Bussi told the media after Carolina’s Game 5 victory, per Daily Faceoff’s Jonny Lazarus. “Just decompress. I’m a pretty boring guy… Between shows right now. I kind of feel like we’re a TV show into a watch a few movies or documentaries. We’re kind of in a grey area right now, so hopefully I can make a decision quick tonight. Hopefully that doesn’t keep me up.”

Society craves larger-than-life personalities, but many times, the most endearing heroes are the ones who are relatable and modest. Brandon Bussi is not a full-blown meteorite, though. He enjoyed plenty of success during the regular season, recording an .894 save percentage and a 2.47 goals against average in 39 starts. Carolina was 31-6-2 in those outings, but head coach Rod Brind’Amour chose to lean on Frederik Andersen’s vast experience during the playoffs.

It is Bussi’s net now, however. The Hurricanes will trust him to help them complete their longstanding quest back to the Stanley Cup. Carolina and Vegas collide in T-Mobile Arena on Sunday, beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
