‘Huge profit’ – Tottenham could lose star worth over £60m to Harry Kane before first game

Tottenham Hotspur have been told that Luka Vuskovic looks better than Jeremy Jacquet – but that they may lose him to Bayern Munich.

That’s the view of European football broadcaster Andy Brassell, who has waxed lyrical over Spurs starlet Vuksovic, who has dazzled on loan at Hamburg.

The 18-year-old linked up with Tottenham last summer – two years after signing him from Hajduk Split.

Spurs forked out £12million to secure his services in 2023, but had to wait for him to turn 18 before the defender could make the move to England.

Two impressive loan spells at Polish outfit Radomiak Radom and Belgian side Westerlo followed, resulting in the two-cap Croatia international being dubbed as one of Europe’s top defensive prospects.

And it didn’t take Vuskovic long to show Spurs fans what all the fuss is about after scoring and assisting on his debut in a 2-0 pre-season win against Reading in July.

Despite showing what he is capable of, Thomas Frank made the decision to ship him out for a third loan move to continue his development – this time in the Bundesliga.

With four goals in 17 top-flight appearances – which includes a stunning acrobatic effort and a recent equaliser against Bayern – Vuskovic’s performances haven’t gone unnoticed.

German giants Bayern and Borussia Dortmund have been linked with a move to sign him this summer, as it remains to be seen what Vuskovic’s role in the Spurs team will be.

How’s your Luk?

For Brassell, he believes that Vuskovic is the superior young European centre-back compared to Liverpool’s new recruit, Jeremy Jacquet, who cost £60m from Rennes.

He told talkSPORT.com: ” Vuskovic looks better than Jacquet, I think it’s fair to say. Everything about him is so incredibly convincing.”

Brassell continued: “Tottenham have got an option, I suppose, of course, there will be people who say, ‘Well, they’ve already got [Pedro] Porro and [Destiny] Udogie, so they can bring Vuskovic back and play Vuskovic, Romero, [Micky] Van der Ven.’

“A lot of this depends on where Tottenham are at the end of the season, whether Thomas Frank is still there, and whether they’ve managed to qualify for Europe again.

“There are so many question marks over where Tottenham are sports-wise at the moment, but they do have options with Vuskovic.

“Obviously, every Spurs fan who’s been watching him from a distance thinks, ‘We want that guy on our team,’ not just because he’s very accomplished already, but because of that leadership, I think.

“And it’s something that it feels that Tottenham are lacking at times.

“I guess the options are, A, integrate him into a three, B, sell Romero while you can still get elite value for him.”

“The other question is, do you sell on Vuskovic?” Brassell continued. “Do you use him for the money?

“Obviously, he could become a really important player for Tottenham. But at the moment, he’s 18, and he’s never played in the Premier League.

“His value, especially in the Bundesliga, is high, so Bayern have been linked to him.

“Borussia Dortmund have been linked to him; they might be doing a bit of a defensive re-rub in the summer.

“The fact that Niklas Sule is going, Nico Schlotterbeck might [be off], we’re going to find out in the weeks to come whether he’s going to sign a new contract or whether he’s going to move on.

“So, Vuskovic has got an enormous amount of interest; they [Spurs] could make a huge, huge profit on a player that’s never played for them really, maybe that is the path of least resistance.

“I tend to think it would be far more sensible for them to either bring him back and integrate him into a three, or for him to replace one of the two existing centre-backs as a starter.

“Probably Romero, because you can get a lot of money for him and the issues that we’ve discussed.”

Meanwhile, ex-Spurs centre-back Ramon Vega, who started in the 1999 League Cup final victory over Leicester, is of the view that Vuskovic has been neglected by the club, which will ultimately lead to a summer exit.

Taking to X, he said: “This player is not coming back to Spurs! Another of many players the Spurs had a chance with, but they made the wrong decision.

“This is an example of the problem Spurs have been having within the football department! A total neglect.

“They will make good money, for sure, but there’s no football direction within the club. Off to Bayern he goes no wonder I will not blame him.”

His comments come amid Bayern legend – and World Cup 1990 and Euro 1990 winner – Lothar Matthaus, lauding Vuskovic.

Speaking after Bayern’s 2-2 draw with Hamburg, he said: “At the age of 18, he plays as if he had already played three World Cups!

“Even when I was 30, I didn’t see what he saw at 18. This player is SO intelligent.”

Vuskovic told to join Bayern

And Vuskovic has been urged to make the move to the Allianz Arena by ex-Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic, who is in the top ten for goals and appearances for Croatia’s national team.

The 2015 Champions League winner told Sky Germany: “All of European football is talking about him right now.

“Bayern Munich needs to step up their game. I believe this lad has to go to Bayern Munich.

“It’s incredibly exciting to see such a young guy making such a splash in the football world.

“I’m curious to see if Tottenham will manage to keep him beyond the summer, because in my opinion, he’s already ready for the next step to one of the absolute top clubs.

“And for me, there are only four or five of those in Europe.”

Vuskovic still has four-and-a-half-years left on his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Fans will next get a look at him in action when Hamburg face Heidenheim away on Saturday afternoon.
