Horse racing tips for Saturday 7 March: Selections from Sandown and Wolverhampton

There are a total of six meetings scheduled across Britain and Ireland on Saturday, four jump fixtures, including Sandown’s Imperial Cup card, accompanied by a pair of AW Flat cards, one of which at Wolverhampton features the Lincoln Trial.

Our expert, Colm Doyle, has a trio of selections for the day’s action.

Saturday horse racing tips

1.58 Gowran Park – Buldagan Castle

Philip Rothwell’s Bulgaden Castle, who missed an intended engagement at Naas on Wednesday due to unsuitable heavy ground, should find the drying conditions at Gowran Park in his favour.

The five-year-old, who was placed in an Irish point on good to yielding ground last spring, started out over intermediate trips over hurdles, but the drop back to 2m the last twice has really suited the son of Soldier Of Fortune, the gelding improving by around 20lb on what he’d achieved initially.

He ran to a career-best Racing Post Rating of 115 when keeping on strongly to beat all bar Straight John in a big field Punchestown maiden a fortnight ago and he’s since been handed an official mark matching that.

This race lacks depth and If he runs to that, he’ll likely be tough to beat.

3.00 Sandown – Capricciose

Dan Skelton’s Capricciose has four lengths to make up on her now stablemate Lune Brilliant from their meeting at Carlisle in November, but she’s double the price of that rival and represents good each-way value.

The four-year-old, a half-sister to smart 2m-2m5f hurdle winner Davids Charm and useful staying chaser Terry The Fish, cost 1,200gns at the sales last year and was friendless in the market ahead of her introduction for John Dawson, sent-off at odds 33-1.

Having lost her position at halfway, likely through greenness, she finished off strongly under Brian Hughes and was gaining quickly at the line, pulling 12 lengths clear of the fourth-placed horse.

She built on that promise when scoring over the same course-and-distance in December and has since been purchased by Skelton for £55,000.

This stiff track ought to suit and she’ll likely be staying on at the finish when others have cried enough.

3.15 Wolverhampton – Cool Hoof Luke

Andrew Balding’s Cool Hoof Luke, who proved himself one of the best two-year-olds around in 2024, finishing in the frame in Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and winning the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes at York, ran a smashing race on his belated return to action in the Listed Kachy Stakes at Lingfield at the end of January and is hard to oppose.

The selection had three subsequent Group 1 winners behind him when scoring on the Knavesmire and posted a personal best Racing Post Rating of 111 when beaten just little over a length by Diligent Harry (winner again since) on his comeback.

He sets the standard on official ratings and is entitled to have sharpened up from a physical perspective.
