Heat’s Pat Riley preaches flexibility amid Norman Powell, Andrew Wiggins contract talks
MIAMI – As the Miami Heat are surrounded by rumors heading into the 2026 offseason, the team also has other big decisions incoming for certain players like Norman Powell and Andrew Wiggins. With the Heat led by Bam Adebayo for the future, it’ll be the pieces around him that make or break the team, as Pat Riley speaks on the contract statuses of Powell, Wiggins, and even Tyler Herro.
Powell earned his first All-Star nod this past season after being traded from the Los Angeles Clippers in the prior offseason, and while his usage was up-and-down in the second half of the year, he still was productive, leading Miami with 21.7 points per game.
He becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer, making his future with Miami up in the air, having failed to get a contract extension during the season. As for Wiggins, who was the main piece in the package back to the Heat in the multi-team Jimmy Butler trade to the Golden State Warriors, he’s been a perfect complementary piece to Adebayo and others in Miami.
His summer looks different as he has until June 29 to either opt into his $30 million player option or hit the market. As for the star guard in Herro, he will be up for an extension this summer, as Riley speaks on being “careful” with handing out big contracts.
“We will talk to [Herro’s] agent, we’ll talk to [Wiggins’] agent, we’ll talk to Norm’s, these are the primary guys…But the point is that I think right now, we have to show a level of discipline in extending out contracts that are big money contracts. I think you got to be a little bit careful with that. It’s not an indictment against any of our guys,” Riley said.
Pat Riley says he will speak to Tyler Herro, Andrew Wiggins, and Norman Powell’s agents on potential extensions, contract questions, etc.

Pat Riley stresses how the Heat has flexibility in many aspects
It remains to be seen what happens with Powell, Wiggins, and Herro, but if there’s one thing for certain, it’s that the Heat are trying to be smart and somewhat frugal. Riley would speak on how the Butler trade back in Feb. of 2025 gave them “flexibility” in a ton of areas that will help the team down the line.
He’d also speak on Herro’s injury woes this past season, missing 48 games due to a myriad of injuries, though the hope is that everything will be cleaned up in the offseason. Especially since Herro is getting a procedure done on his right foot.
“After the Butler trade, we ended up with flexibility, roster flexibility, exception flexibility, cap flexibility, tax flexibility, and we got a bunch of good young guys that play their ass off. And so, it’s now adding to that from that standpoint,” Riley said. “So it’s unfortunate what happened with Tyler this year; he’s having a procedure done, preemptive procedure done, which I like, is good. He’ll be ready to go, I think, by July. So he’s got more than enough time ahead of training camp, and we all know what Tyler can do.”
Heat’s Pat Riley on Norman Powell, Andrew Wiggins wanting to return
Riley would speak more on the “big picture” that the Heat and players have to understand, which he expresses when talking about the futures of Powell and Wiggins. The team president would even say how both have relayed to Riley during exit interviews that they would like to stay here.
“But as far as is locking ourselves up with anybody right now, I think having good, honest discussions with their agents about next year is what’s on the table for us because I have absolutely great respect for Wiggs and Norm both of them have expressed to me at the exit interview they really would like to stay here, you know, but they have to be aware of the big picture also, and they understand that, they’re both very savvy businessmen, players from that standpoint, same thing with Tyler. He understands now,” Riley said.
At any rate, fans will have to wait to see what the future holds for Herro, Powell, and Wiggins in the summer, with Miami’s goal being to improve after finishing 43-39, 10th in the East, while missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019.
