‘First ballot Hall of Famer’ James Harden forced NBA to change rules as decade-long NBA Finals wait goes on

James Harden is one of the most polarizing NBA players in recent history, but one thing has escaped him throughout his career.

That is, of course, a ring. Harden is considered to be one of the best NBA players to never to win a championship, and his hopes of righting that ship are on a knife edge.

The Cleveland Cavaliers were in great shape heading into Game 6 at home, having erased a 2-0 series deficit against the Detroit Pistons to lead 3-2.

Leading 3-2, the Cavs were dismantled by the Pistons 118-94.

The game followed a similar pattern to Game 5 which Detroit controlled, but this time there was to be no comeback for the Cavs as the Pistons forced a Game 7 decider.

Now, staring down the barrel on Sunday night, Harden’s quest for that elusive chip could fall at the penultimate hurdle.

Harden played 37 grueling minutes in the defeat, finishing with 23 points, seven rebounds, and four assists as Cleveland’s offense completely stagnated down the stretch.

With eight turnovers on the night against the Pistons, Harden now has the third-most turnovers in the playoffs all-time, surpassing Shaquille O’Neal.

Harden has been under a microscope throughout the NBA playoffs.

There has been a massive debate regarding his historical impact on the sport, with former teammate Chandler Parsons making a comment about the guard’s legacy.

Speaking on FanDuel TV’s Run It Back, Parsons paid the ultimate compliment to the 36-year-old, reminding everyone the league had to change the rules for him in an attempt to put a lid on his dominance.

“I think he doesn’t get the credit he deserves. When I play with him in Houston, he had just left OKC, like you said, he was kind of that six-man role,” Parsons said.

“This was his opportunity to kind of be the face of a franchise and become who he is today. And he did it and he was so talented offensively. He’s so strong.

“They literally had to change the kind of the swing through foul because you could not guard him because anytime you’d reach, he would just create the contact and get the whistle every single time, he’s first ballot Hall of Fame.”

Cleveland acquired Harden at the trade deadline for situations like this, providing a steady hand and calming presence next to star Donovan Mitchell.

The Cavaliers have won just one NBA title in their 56-year franchise history – when LeBron James led his hometown club to the 2016 championship.

This is their fourth consecutive season making the post season and the last two have finished in Conference semifinal defeats tot he Indiana Pacers last year and the Boston Celtic in 2023-24.

Harden has reached the playoffs in all 17 of his seasons but the one and only time he reached the finals was in 2012.

A then 22-year-old Harden was part of a terrifying Oklahoma City Thunder young core alongside Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

The Thunder ultimately caved in five games, and just months later, Oklahoma City’s front office famously traded Harden to the Houston Rockets.

An eight and a half year run in Houston delivered his only other trip to the Conference Finals, when the Rockets proved to be the only real postseason test for the all-conquering Golden State Warriors.

Harden and the Rockets led the series 3-2 only to drop the final two games and were left to reflect on what might have been.

After a short stops in Brooklyn and Philadelphia, Harden moved on to the Clippers before his trade to the Cavs.

With his 2026 Cleveland squad now facing a high-stakes, winner-take-all battle to keep their season alive, the veteran is running out of time to replace those bitter 2012 memories with a championship ring.
