Fever HC Stephanie White’s biggest regret from late-game blunder during Sky game

The Indiana Fever defeated the Chicago Sky 114-106 in overtime on Thursday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, but the spotlight fell on the closing moments of regulation.

With Indiana ahead 96-93 and 18.9 seconds left, Caitlin Clark extended the lead to five points at the free-throw line. However, with 5.1 seconds left, the Fever turned the ball over on an inbounds play. Chicago capitalized immediately as Skylar Diggins tied the game at 98 with a long three-pointer, sending the contest into overtime.

Indiana head coach Stephanie White acknowledged the pivotal tactical decision postgame.

“I think we had time to take a foul, that’s something we worked on a lot in training camp, and with game planning recently, we haven’t worked on probably as much as that situation as we needed to,” said White. “We talked about it as a staff, but then you got to trust that you can go out and execute it in those moments too. We just decided to stay the match that time, and we still talk about it after the game.

“That’s an area where we have opportunity, and as a coach and a broadcaster, I love-hate the taking a foul thing, but we’ve got to have options both ways.”

Despite the late-game blunder, the Fever controlled overtime. Indiana outscored the Sky 16-8 in the extra period, while Chicago shot just 1-of-8 from the field. The Fever improved to 7-5, while the Sky dropped to 4-8.

Aliyah Boston finished with 34 points and 12 rebounds, while Clark had 32 points and 10 assists. Both became the first teammates in WNBA history to record 30-point double-doubles in the same game. Kelsey Mitchell contributed 19 points and Lexie Hull added 11.

Chicago was led by rookie Sydney Taylor with 30 points off the bench and Diggins with 21. The Sky had previously led by as many as six in the fourth quarter before Indiana tied the game at 98-98 to force overtime.

Up next, the Fever hit the road Saturday to face the Connecticut Sun.
